A new working paper published by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative in October 2019 employs Itad’s evaluation of the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in Northern Ghana in its assessment of the project’s impact on multidimensional poverty.
The paper, which was written by Edoardo Masset and García Hombrados, uses a large dataset spanning five years on multiple welfare indicators. It finds that MVP had a positive impact on the global multidimensional poverty index (MPI), while only having a limited impact on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The authors emphasize that the global MPI should be used with caution in the evaluation of development programmes.
The MVP was a five-year project funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) in Northern Ghana with interventions targeting a total population of nearly 30,000 people. In collaboration with the Institute of Development Studies and PDA Ghana, Itad conducted a five-year evaluation of MVP on the project’s effectiveness in tackling poverty and inequality in the country.
