The ISLA project aimed to demonstrate how small islands in North-East Europe can turn their constraints (like being sparsely populated, often geographically remote and environmentally and economically vulnerable) into assets for sustainable development.
The study
There were three main parts to the study; to compare, review and demonstrate the role of government in dealing with small island issues; to study and demonstrate how island authorities cope with EU Directives, policies and legislation – and use this to formulate island-specific recommendations; and to evaluate and demonstrate practical solutions to energy supply on islands.
