Projeto Mamiraua Output to Purpose Review

2000; Brazil; DFID

Itad was contracted by DFID to review the performance of Projecto Mamirauá, in Amazonas State, Brazil.

A purpose review was created to examine the links between forest conservation and people’s livelihoods in the project area. Specifically, the progress of the project’s efforts in ecotourism and improvements in water/sanitation were investigated.

The project sought to achieve sustainable development in the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, ensuring both economic development for local residents of the reserve and conservation of the reserve’s biodiversity. The area is representative of Amazonian ‘varzea’ (flooded forest), and has high levels of endemism.
